"As a collector of art myself, I strongly believe in the importance of incorporating fine art into any interior design plan. Art feeds the soul and expresses our individuality. Fine art, whether it be paintings, sculpture, prints, or textiles, such as antique rugs and tapestries, should always be the jumping-off point for all good interior design." - Lauren Ames

Dorothy Thayne
Dorthy Thayne's painting of Icon of the Mother of God

Dorothy Thayne's Icons are painted in the Byzantine style, a source of sacred art for both Western and Eastern churches. Materials of the highest quality are used, including gold leaf, natural pigments bound with the yolk of an egg, and a base of poplar wood covered with a gesso of chalk and marble dust. The paint is applied in many layers, resulting in a translucency that gives the Icon the elusive quality of inner light.

An Icon is a work of art painted in a prayerful manner, using symbolic visual language and images that originate in early Church tradition.

A canon of depiction ensures that the meaning of the originals is not altered by the individual iconographer. Subtle artistic nuances, however, create styles that differentiate Icons of one culture or time period from another. Icons are often called "windows to heaven"; mystical intermediaries between the earthly and heavenly realms. As sacred objects blessed by the Church, Icons are aids to prayer.

Ms Thayne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her Icons can be seen at St. Thomas More Church in Decatur, GA, the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA, and St. Agnes Church, in Cape May Point, NJ. She resides in Lancaster, PA.
